The Red Raiders led Northwestern 24-6 at the midway mark of the TicketCity Bowl at Cotton Bowl Stadium – their largest halftime lead in a postseason game since the 2002 Tangerine Bowl against Clemson.
Taylor Potts and Tech’s defense were largely responsible for the comfortable advantage, which put the team in position to win its first postseason game at the historic Dallas stadium. The senior quarterback completed 26 of 33 passes for 243 yards and touchdowns to Austin Zouzalik and Lyle Leong, who had seven receptions for 97 yards in the opening half.
The Red Raiders held Northwestern to 159 total yards, 78 of which came on the Wildcats’ only scoring drive. Freshman quarterback Kain Colter finished that drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, and he was the game’s leading rusher in the first half with 49 yards on nine carries.
Three injuries put a damper on Tech’s dominant first-half performance. Offensive lineman LaAdrian Waddle, linebacker Bront Bird and safety Brett Dewhurst left the game with sprained knees and were being evaluated in the locker room.
