Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11 and 12, GLOBe-IN, a blood drive organized by five university students will take place at the Canadian Islamic Centre Aljamieh on Anselme Lavigne St. in Dollard des Ormeaux. This drive has a particular goal: to bring together doners of various origins.
"Four of my friends and I have decided to organize a blood drive for Héma-Québec recently. We are working very hard since the beginning of November to organize this and attain our objective. Our goal is to bring many new donors of various cultures, religions and backgrounds to maintain a certain degree of diversity in the blood bank of Quebec,” explained McGill student and blood drive organizer Constantina Totosegis.
She and the four other co-organizers wish to bring 60 donors or more to come to the drive. She said that to attain a total of 75 donors would be a desirable outcome.
On the organizing committee are young people of all origins. Sherif Youssef is a student in biomedical imaging at Université de Montréal, Camille Dabar is a student in physiotherapy at McGill while Paul Nakhleh studies business at Concordia and Nazanine Gholami is a kinesiology student at Université de Montréal.
Héma-Québec president Francine Décary recalled, in the midst of Black History Month, that the chances of obtaining optimal compatibility between donor and receiver are better if they both are from the same community.
The Canadian Islamic Centre Al-Jamieh will be open for the drive on Fri., Feb. 11 between 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sat., Feb. 12, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The address of the centre is 241, Anselme Lavigne St. in Dollard des Ormeaux.
