With wind gusts at 30 mph at times, the snow fell horizontally, reducing visibility to dangerous levels throughout the Jersey Shore.
Acting Gov. Stephen M. Sweeney, the state Senate president and a Democrat from Gloucester County, was expected to declare a state of emergency late Sunday night. Gov. Chris Christie and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno are vacationing out of state for the holidays, so the powers of governor fall to the Senate president.
New Jersey Transit suspended bus service statewide Sunday night and cut back rail service on Monday because of the storm. The buses were suspended starting at 8:30 p.m. Meteorologist Jim Hayes with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly said the blizzard would clear by daybreak, but conditions could remain hazardous for the morning commute.
